Above and beyond
While vintage hardware contains the secret 'mojo' that gives classic records their character and tone, they are often extremely difficult to source, costly and limited in their functionality. This is where Soundtoys take advantage of the possibilities of the digital realm by adding features to improve workflow and functionality, blending the best of both worlds. Taking things beyond the capabilities of the hardware, Devil-Loc Deluxe adds a Darkness control that allows you to soften the higher frequencies for a warmer tone. This can be invaluable when driving Devil-Loc Deluxe into soaring overdrive and distortion as it will introduce complex harmonics that accentuate the higher frequencies to ensure the sound remains smooth and not harsh or piercing. Additionally, a selectable Release switch from Slow to Fast has been added that allows you to swap between a slow release time of approximately 1.7 seconds to a fast time of 0.85 seconds. With this control, you can cater Devil-Loc Deluxe to a wider variety of sound sources, not limiting you to just vocals! Set the release time faster for percussive instruments to retain the natural decay and only limit the initial attack to reduce the transient or set the release time to slow and limit the decay of an electric guitar to limit the full signal range to keep a smooth and even level when you're performing.
Lastly, a mix knob has been added that doesn't feature on the original hardware to perform parallel processing and dial in the exact amount of effect you need to get the desired sound. The addition of these controls opens up a new palette of tones to transform your basic sound to a thunderous, dark and overdriven behemoth that will grab the attention of your listener and bring them into your music.
Roots in broadcasting
Designed around the circuit of a vintage audio limiter from the '60s, the original purpose was in public address systems. To ensure an announcers voice could be heard loud and clear in large public spaces, very aggressive compression circuits were used to level the voice so that any dip or peak in volume would be levelled out to be ultra-consistent. This then became assimilated into the world of music production and was used as a secret weapon for creative sound engineers looking to add character and distortion to their sound.
As the original unit was optimised for human speech, Devil-Loc Deluxe 5 performs flawlessly on vocal performance, evening out any fluctuations in volume to keep a steady level to cut your performance above most mixes, including heavy mixes with a wall of instruments.
Streamlined processing with Devil-Loc 5
Included free with Soundtoys Devil-Loc Deluxe 5 is a digital download licence for Devil-Loc 5. This stripped down version of the plug-in boasts the same sonic performance whilst giving you an intuitive and sleek interface for lighter CPU processing. With preset attack and release times, Devil-Loc 5 lets you push it to the limits and experiment with fuzzy, blooming and gated effects for your drums, vocals, guitar and anything else you might want to throw at it. The two-dial, CPU-friendly format is ideal for track-heavy projects that require all the grit and mojo of Devil-Loc, without slowing down computer processing power.
