Choose the right string for you
Many string makers put a lot of care and thought into the
materials for their strings and Larsen is no exception. The steel
in the core of all the strings allows for a superior level of
projection and durability than any gut string can provide. The
single steel core of the A and D strings provides the brightest and
most projective sound of the set, perfect for the higher strings.
The core of the G and C strings consists of a concentric
multi-stranded steel core. This adds more durability and warmth to
the lower strings of the set.
The winding of the strings is also of tantamount importance. The
precision rolled stainless steel, like which is seen on the viola
strings by Larsen, provides further brightness and durability while
also being resistant to corrosion. The lower strings are wound with
tungsten, a material with a much warmer and more focussed tonal
quality than steel which is much more appropriate for the lower
strings.
Larsen offers their cello strings in three tensions so you can
pick the ideal tension for your instrument and playing style. The
lighter tensions are most appealing to players who prefer a quicker
response to a bow and a lesser amount of pressure needed to stop
the strings. The heavy tension is great for extra power and volume,
it just needs more effort to bow.
For their cello sets, Larsen also offers an additional E-string
which can be bought as a single string in medium tension. This
steel-cored string is wound with a flat aluminium wire in a very
similar manner to the violin strings from Larsen. This string is
designed for five-string cellos and can deliver the brightest
sounds possible for such a high string.
Soloist Edition
If you want the ultimate level of performance for soloistic
playing. Then the Larsen Soloist Edition cello strings are the
perfect option for you. These strings are made to a slightly
different dimension to the standard Larsen cello strings and
therefore have slightly different properties as a result. The C
string is omitted from the soloist edition, the colour and
projection of the normal set is already perfectly capable of the
warm low end.
The remaining three strings feature a solid steel core that was
normally reserved for the A string. This allows the brightness and
projection that the original A-string has to be shared with the
other strings. Much like the originals, the winding of the A and D
strings is precision rolled stainless steel and the G string is
wound with tungsten. The strings' thinner diameter and slightly
heavier tensions provide that extra lift to dynamics, brightness
and projection that an excellent set of solo strings require for
breathtaking performances.
Larsen Strings
Larsen began in 1990 when Laurits Th. Larsen was tasked with
obtaining 300 strings for a colleague. Larsen decided to make the
strings himself in his garage. In 18 months his first cello A
string was produced. Since then, Larsen has expanded, producing
strings for violin, viola, and cello. Larsen provides their strings
in a packaged envelope like many strings. What sets Larsen apart is
that they are embossed and sealed in their envelopes, ensuring the
authenticity and quality of each string from Larsen.
