Key Features
Pirastro Oliv strings are finely wound gut strings wound with metal wire for extra sound colours. These strings are ideal if you're looking to explore more traditional sounds on your instrument. Each string is made of sheep gut and is traditionally made by meticulously polishing and winding by hand. The strings are then each wound with metal, chosen specifically to bring out the tonal colours of the individual string.
Each winding is chosen to match the string, the A string is wound with aluminium for its bright tonal qualities, and the D-string has added gold to the aluminium to provide more warmth. The G string has gold and silver to add a different warm tone to the sound and the C string uses tungsten-silver which really accentuates the lower depths of the viola's range. All these enhancements with metal are held together by the gut sound the core provides.

Oliv viola D-strings come with a silver-only wound variation, this provides extra warmth to the sound that you might prefer on your D-string. This string is available in multiple gauges so you can choose the right tension string.
Pirastro's gut strings come in multiple amounts of tension for each string. This is different from the metal and synthetic core strings, which usually have three tension levels. Gut strings by Pirastro are measured in PM (Pirastro Measurements), 1 PM is equivalent to 0.05mm diameter, so a 14 PM string is 0.7mm in diameter. Strings tend to be measured in 1/4 PM increments, this results in a 3% change in tension for every 1/4 PM.
Oliv viola strings are all measured in PM. The A-string has a range of 13.5 PM to 14 PM, the D-string ranges from 16 PM to 16.4 PM (14 to 14.5 with silver wound variant), the G-string has a range of 16.75 PM to 17.25 PM and the C-string ranges from 19.5 PM to 20 PM. With these ranges, you can choose the best tension for your playing and your instrument.
Pirastro was founded in 1798 as "Giorgio Pirazzi and Sons". It all started with Giorgio Pirazzi who learned the craft of string making across Italy and then moved to Offenbach, Germany and began his company. Nearly a century later, Pirazzi's grandson invited his friend, Theodore Strobel, to join him as a business partner. They combined the beginnings of their names together to create Pirastro. Today Pirastro is still run by the Pirazzi family and makes high-quality strings that are used by musicians all over the world and at the very highest standards of performance.
