Expect the unexpected
Thinking outside the box can so often lead to moments of inspiration that help you explore your creativity to the fullest. Like so many other Rob Papen plugins, XY-Transfer pushes you outside of your comfort zone and encourages exploration to find something unique in your productions every time you open the plugin. What may initially seem like just another filter plugin, XY-Transfer goes far beyond this, offering explorative sound design to find new and interesting sounds to take your productions to the next level.
The main crux of XY-Transfer lies within the three main banks. Each bank can be used in a multitude of different ways and includes modes such as Filter, Comb Filter, Shaper, Room and Gater, each with its own unique set of parameters. As the main purpose of XY-Transfer is filtering, you can select between 36 unique filter types ranging from low-pass, high-pass, notch, band-pass and more all with 6, 12, 18, 24 and 36dB/oct slope options. The wide range of filtering and other sound manipulation tools lets you go far beyond what you think a traditional filter bank can do. Instead, with XY-Transfer you can alter your original sound to something unheard of and otherworldly to add a new dynamic and texture to your productions, helping you stand out from the crowd and get your music heard.
Instead of reaching for several individual plugins to perform multiple filtering options, XY-Transfer puts them all in a single structured window to give you the tools you need to transform your audio signals. The several filtering options are ideal for both subtle and gentle 6dB high-pass sweeps, adding tension to your build-ups as well as extreme resonance and sonic destruction. More creative effects can be achieved through the use of sound banks such as the Gater. Triggering MIDI tempo-synced stepped gates which add fresh rhythmic structure to your sound, keeping your audience glued to the dance floor.
Polished off with a flexible stereo delay with independent left and right channel timings, you will never run out of things to explore with XY-Transfer.
Discover new ways to manipulate filters with XY morphing
Familiar to the Rob Papen brand, each bank features an independent XY morphing pad. This is where your sound design possibilities reach new heights. Where traditional methods of automation or filter sweeps fall short is their predictability. Patterns will be drawn and limit the range of sounds available, even when using complex filtering plugins. Rob Papen XY-Transfer takes the baton and runs with it. Imagine being able to have your filtering expand over time, morphing and changing as the music evolves. This is exactly what the XY pads have to offer. Your creative outlet will never cease as the seemingly endless range of motion will give you a new outcome every time.
It's not just the filtering that contains the XY pad as all three banks offer independent XY pads. Now you can dynamically adjust the Low-Fi, Frequency Modulation, Gate or even Amplifier parameters with a range of motion that evolves over time. Similar to Rob Papen's Vecto synthesizer, XY-Transfer offers a range of different parameters, each of which can be modulated using the onboard Modulation Matrix, to customise your morphing. Two modes of operation are included to allow you to drag the position around in Live mode or to use pre-selected patterns in Replay mode. All of the preset shapes can be altered by changing the number of steps up to a maximum of 32 as well as altering the looping point, maximum speed and of course MIDI tempo sync.
The inclusion of both Time and Space quantisation opens up new possibilities for creating rhythmical sounds that are bound by the position on the XY pad. Where typically in a vector synth, your sound will be created through a series of free movements, XY-Transfer allows you to restrict the time and space parameters to align with the rhythm of your project. Using Time Quantise, you can select any rhythm from 1/1 to 16/1 with triplet and dotted variations as well. Space Quantise reduces the ability for your dots to move by the division of the XY grid. Opting for a larger Space Quantisation will give your dots more finite movement for subtle variations, whereas selecting a smaller quantisation will create large steps with big changes between each step.
Modulation and signal flow
Although each block is represented numerically, XY-Transfer can alter the signal flow between each block from a pre-selected number of different options. As a plugin based in the non-conventional, this is ideal for creating avant-garde sounds in your productions. Experiment with placing your delay first in the chain, where each repeat of your delay will feed into the filter and sound blocks, creating exciting and unique tonal qualities for each repeat. For a more clean and precise sound, XY-Transfer also includes parallel delay signal paths to run alongside the rest of your signal processing.
Taking cues from previous synthesizer offerings within the Rob Papen range, XY-Transfer includes a Modulation Matrix with four simultaneous connections at any one time. In a plugin such as XY-Transfer, the value of the modulation matrix cannot be understated. Virtually every parameter can be used as both source and destination, helping you to increase the unpredictability and instability of your sound design exponentially. Perfect for live sound designers and performers, with the Modulation Matrix, you could modulate the feedback levels of your stereo delay by the position of your XY pad, creating an atmospheric and cinematic decay that is sure to keep your audience engaged with your music.
