J Mascis & the Jazzmaster
The Fender Jazzmaster was created in 1958 as a high-end jazz guitar. It grew into a cult favourite for rock and indie musicians, and J Mascis epitomises this trend. While the Jazzmaster never found mainstream popularity in jazz, its low second-hand prices made it a popular alternative to the ubiquitous Telecaster and Stratocaster. J Mascis adopted the Jazzmaster for this very reason - the Stratocaster was more than he could afford, at the time.
Mascis really made the guitar his own, and now you can get a Squier signature version of his iconic guitar featuring special upgrades to take the Jazzmaster to the next level. J Mascis uses the Jazzmaster in his band Dinosaur Jr for a wide range of alt-rock sounds and with the Squier signature model you'll find a versatile and smooth-playing instrument.
Signature Playability
This guitar features special signature appointments to enhance its playability over the original Jazzmaster. Jumbo frets give improved control over the strings, especially when playing lead guitar techniques such as string bends and vibrato. The guitar also features a satin-finished neck creating a smooth surface when traversing the fingerboard.
Mascis also specified a dual single-coil design for a wide range of bright and resonant tones, along with an Adjusto-Matic bridge with vintage-style floating tailpiece. This bridge design was the one that Mascis grew used to on his original Jazzzmaster and, ever since, he has modified his guitars to include it. The Adjusto-Matic bridge gives full adjustability for intonation and action, while the floating tremolo tailpiece provides access to subtle pitch-shifting effects for an expressive performance.
Stand-Out Aesthetics
The J Mascis signature guitar features the classic off-set Jazzmaster outline and vintage-tremolo. The vintage aesthetic is enhanced by the Vintage White finish and classy gold-anodized aluminium pickguard, giving you an effortlessly-cool look to make your mark on stage.
Classic Jazzmaster Electronics
The Jazzmaster has two single-coil pickups and a 3-way pickup selector switch. This gives you three distinct sounds from biting bridge-position sounds to mellow neck-position tones, letting you cover many different clean and overdriven sounds with ease. The guitar also features a separate "Rhythm" circuit switch. When engaged, this circuit provides a separate volume and tone control for the neck pickup only. This allows you to set up two preset sounds to switch between during a live performance - a lead tone with master volume/tone dials, and a rhythm tone with the auxiliary volume/tone controls.
