The Gariel was produced 300 years ago and has since been described as one of the most important 30 violins ever made. The Gariel is currently played by the multi award winning Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti, whom was loanded the instrument in 2011 by banker and philanthropist, Jonathon Moulds. This 1717 model was originally made in Antonio's Stradivari's workshop in the Piazza San Domenico. The one-piece back made of maple offers an original sound and look.
The use of maple and spruce is a tried and tested combination used in superior quality violins. This combination produces a focused, powerful sound with plenty of body and tonal warmth, which will only improve over time. The woods are hand selected based on their age and narrowness of grain, before being hand carved for a sound and appearance full of heritage. The distance between the grain affects the resonance of the instrument, with a narrower grain resulting in a more responsive, full bodied and weighted sound with a strong tonal core. The maple back and sides assist in keeping the violin hard wearing and durable.
Few orchestral musicians have been regarded as highly as Nicola Benedetti. Her captivating performances and versatility have made her respected by traditional and modern musicians alike. As the current user of the original 1717 Gariel Stradivarius, Benedetti is familiar with its every characteristic and utilises it efficiently for her own music. Because of this unique relationship, each copy of this violin model is equipped with a certificate of authenticity from Benedetti herself. This is a rare opportunity to own one of the finest instruments with a certificate from one the violin's most prominent artists.
