The Gibson Hummingbird features a stunning sitka spruce top that offers a broad dynamic range and crisp articulation. Its sitka spruce top projects a sparkling high response and tight, clear attack perfect for pronounced players. The wood itself is quite elastic in nature, which resonates well whilst remaining strong, and provides a focused, clear sound of deep lows, warm midi-range, and bright sparkling highs. The Hummingbird's sitka spruce top is accompanied by mahogany back and sides that add a characterised warmth to its sweet and brightly toned sitka spruce top. Used as back and side panels the mahogany delivers a meaty mid-range, producing punchy, woody tones with plenty of depth and complexity that will please most playing styles. Mahogany is used a lot in the acoustic world, because it is relatively economical, durable, attractive, easy to work with, and resonant.
To provide a strong and durable playing experience, the Hummingbird's neck has been crafted from mahogany, offering a resonant sound and comfortable, smooth play. The neck is crafted from mahogany because the wood responds greatly to picking, strumming, and various finger techniques with equal ease. The neck is topped with a rosewood fingerboard that produces warmth and a bright sizzling-sparkle that really shines through when using fingerpicking techniques. The rosewood fingerboard also offers a smooth and energetic playing experience. The fingerboard is sprinkled with slanted-block inlays to add to its already elegant appearance.
The Gibson Hummingbird features a square shouldered body shape that projects an enormous voice and maintains overall tonal balance. The square shoulders of the dreadnought shape provides a great bass response due to sound having more room to reverberate around the body. The big body is ideal for players with a longer reach, and those more comfortable with the dreadnought size. The sheer volume the Hummingbird can project makes it the perfect choice for the singer/songwriter. Vocalists can really push their diaphragm to the max and not feel too loud against the guitar's volume, as the Hummingbird will sing as loud as you do.
The Gibson Hummingbird comes equipped with the popular VTC Element Pickup from L.R. Baggs, which features a low-profile undersaddle pickup that's proven more stable and durable than many standard ribbon-type pickups. Combined with an unobtrusive and removable volume/tone control mounted just inside the soundhole, the Element delivers a performance not previously attainable from an undersaddle pickup. Its sleek and effective design removes unnecessary internal components to enhance the coupling between the pickup and the guitar, and improve the sensitivity for a robust, lively, and natural acoustic sound with excellent dynamics and delicate high end. The Element works with a standard 9V battery, which is housed inside the guitar.
As with many of Gibson's acoustic range, the Hummingbird Left Handed features traditional hand scalloped X-bracing. This specific type of bracing structure consists of two braces forming an 'X' shape across the soundboard which not only enhances the sound and offers a well-balanced tone, but also provides a reinforced stable and durable structure.
