Hand-carved tonewoods

Purposefully designed for students by our in-house experts, the Gear4music student viola offers a fantastic starting point for beginners. By using the historic combination of Maple and Spruce, the student viola produces a light and sweet tone. Not just any Maple and Spruce though. The student viola only uses solid Canadian Spruce and Maple to ensure it's of high quality. Once the student viola has been hand-carved, purfling is delicately inserted to the edge of the instrument. Not only does this prevent the wood from cracking, but it also adds a more premium aesthetic to the viola.

Durable hardware

Understanding the basics of tuning is vital for string players. This is why we've included a tailpiece with four integral fine tuners. Perfect for learning how to tune with those around you, this lightweight alloy tailpiece offers a quick and easy way to fine-tune your viola.

The steel strings included with the Gear4music viola are fantastic for learning on. Thanks to their steel construction, these strings are completely insensitive to variations in temperature and humidity. Once strung across the Maple bridge, these strings produce a beautiful singing tone.

To ensure that you're comfortable while playing, the student viola also comes with a Guarneri style chin rest. Inspired by one of the great Italian instrument makers, this chin rest is ergonomically designed to fit the contours of your chin. Once combined with the matching pegs and Ebonised fingerboard, you will soon realise how great the Gear4music student viola is.

Included accessories

To make sure you can start playing straight away, we include everything you need to get started. To keep the viola safe, it comes with a sturdy case that offers strong protection. Perfect for commuting to concerts and rehearsals, the case has a robust handle as well as adjustable backpack straps so you can always travel in comfort. There is even a large zipped pocket with a stylish Gear4music logo which is perfect for all of your sheet music.

On the inside of the case you will notice that the viola fits perfectly. This is to ensure the instrument doesn't move during transportation to maximise its safety. For an extra touch of protection, the inside is lined with a soft-touch material to protect the finish of your viola. At one end of the case you will find another accessory pocket which is ideal for storing pencils, spare strings, and the included rosin. On the top shell of the case you will find two bow holders - ideal for the included Beechwood bow.
