The Custom Shop SG Standard is a precise and accurate reissue of the very first SG crated, delivering all the history and legendary tone to the modern player. Everything about the original SG has been meticulously recreated, from its distinct features and amazing tone. The ultra-thin mahogany body delivers its classic, sweet, warm tones, and features the iconic wing shaped 5-ply pickguard. The stunning double cutaway design features its classic twin horn style, providing easy access to the upper frets while enhancing resonance and sustain. A new-at-the-time 22 fret rosewood fingerboard and mahogany neck combination provides excellent dynamics, while a slim taper neck profile delivers an incredibly fast performance.
This model features a vintage maestro vibrato system, which was 1 of 4 available vibrato systems used in the 60s. While this tailpiece adds to the truly vintage aesthetic of the SG, it still manages to deliver incredible pitch shifting effects to enhance your playing experience. A stylish lyre engraving was added to the cover plate to finish off its historic style.
Exclusive to Gibson Custom Shop instruments only, the Custom Bucker pickups are crafted with alnico III magnets and wired with an uneven amount of turns to produce a distinctive feel and character unique to your guitar. The individual tone and volume controls for each pickup provide versatility while also allowing you to achieve your desired sound. Designed after the late 50s PAF pickups, which are so highly sought after, you can't get much closer to the same feel and tone than these Custom Buckers.
Although the first guitar to use the SG name was a special Les Paul model from the late 50s, the Iconic design we know and love wasn’t introduced until 1961 as a redesign of the Les Paul. Created to improve Gibson’s popularity, the SG was characterised by its ultra-thin body, double cutaway design with twin horns, bevelled edges, and no binding. Popular amongst players, the ‘redesigned’ Les Paul, as it was known at the time, was not a hit with master luthier Les Paul which resulted in his name being stricken from the guitar and replaced with ‘SG’ in 1963. Since then the legendary guitar has become a massive hit in the world of rock and metal, being used by notable guitarists such as Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi, Angus Young, and many more.
Like all Gibson Custom Shop models, there is a certain level of quality that you will only find with these few selected guitars. Each model has a perfect fret job thanks to the PLEK machine which perfectly levels the frets, letting you play it straight out of the box. The guitar also comes with a Custom Shop Certificate of Authenticity and a classic Gibson brown hardshell case with red fur lining.
